RMML Startup Operations

Background

RMML startup team was founded in 2014 as a spin-off of the Robots and Medical Mechatronics Laboratory (RMML) project at National Taiwan University (NTU). The team's mission was to deliver innovative technology for the healthcare industry, specifically in the area of orthopedic surgery.

Product

The team's first product is an intelligent surgical system that includes navigation software and an intelligent handheld robot. The system is designed to achieve auto-tracking of the surgical tool and suppress tremors from the operator, providing unique ease-of-use features for minimally invasive spine surgery.

My Role

As an operations and project manager, my responsibilities were:

  • Raised funds for the startup by presenting to venture capitalists and angel investors, such as the Ministry of Science and Technology, Johnson & Johnson, and PwC in Taiwan.
  • Worked with the founder, a vice president at PwC, and business managers at the Taiwan Supra Integration and Incubation Center (Si2C) to establish step-by-step business strategic and financial planning.
  • Led the team to participate in startup competitions and wrote business proposals.
  • Created a project management process for a team of six engineers, which included defining and prioritizing deliverables to improve the efficiency of the R&D team.
  • Engaged with stakeholders, such as intellectual property, management, and regulatory consulting firms, to ensure compliance and risk mitigation.
  • Negotiated technology transfer and licensing agreements with NTU, which enabled the startup to access critical research and development resources.

Results

  • Successfully raised 100% of the target funds in a seed round by securing a place at Taiwan Supra Integration and Incubation Center (Si2C), which provided critical resources and support for our business development.
  • Led a team to participate in a startup pitch competition held by From IP to IPO Program (FITI), placing in the top 20 out of 150+ competing teams; personally achieved recognition as the top 3 presenter, showcasing exceptional communication and presentation skills.
